RAGTIME COMPOSITION CONTEST

Attention Ragtime Composers!

COMPOSE THE OKLAHOMA CENTENNIAL RAG

The Ragtime for Tulsa Foundation is announcing our gift to Oklahoma for its 100th birthday.   We are holding a contest for a rag to be written commemorating the 100th birthday of our state.   Oklahoma became a state in 1907, when ragtime was the rage of the nation.   Prior to that time it was Indian Territory, where the Lockapoka Creek Indian Nation, after relocation from Alabama, met at their Council Oak on a bluff above the Arkansas River near Tulsey Town.   In 1901 oil had been discovered across the river at Red Fork and we soon became the "Oil Capital of the World."   We have a state and city to be proud of, with cattle and aviation playing tremendous roles in our growth.

We would like to commission "The Tulsey Town Rag."   The title comes from the name given to Tulsa by the early settlers, perhaps a name variant of a tribal town in Alabama known as Tulasi, meaning "old town."   It is also the title of Ragtime for Tulsa’s newsletter.

The composer of the winning rag will receive $1,000 and the composition will be premiered during the Oklahoma Centennial Ragtime Festival October 12-13, 2007.   See the rules below and get busy composing that "Tulsey Town Rag."
