The Evergreen Trio, led by ragtime pianist Dan Grinstead, excels at ragtime and early jazz. The Trio began as the rhythm section of the Evergreen Classic Jazz Band of Seattle. The band, founded in 1985, focused on ragtime and early jazz from the 1920s. In the early days of the band the trio usually played a tune or two on each set, and only recently have they struck out on their own.
The trio has recently recorded their first CD entitled "It's A Rouser". Reviews of the the CD in music publications and on the internet have ranged from "wonderful" to "outstanding." The June 1, 2004 Tulsa concert is the trio's first appearance east of the Rockies. The Trio presents both familiar and obscure tunes with the dandy combination of piano, tenor banjo, tuba, and percussion.
Dan Grinstead of Seattle plays solo piano in the small worlds of ragtime and traditional jazz. He is a well-known solo and duet ragtime performer who has played at all the important ragtime festivals in North America. Grinstead has recorded solo ragtime CDs and a duet CD with Glenn Jenks entitled "Ragtime Bigtime." In West Seattle he is a regular performer for vaudeville and silent movies. Dan's interest in ragtime began in 1955 with sheet music, old records and player piano rolls. He has a real job as a marine engineer.
Tom Jacobus (tuba) of Kent, Washington, is the leader of the Evergreen Classic Jazz Band, with whom all the members of the trio have played. He arranges most of the tunes and books the Trio locally and nationally. He is also a junior high school music teacher, with an award-winning concert band.
Jeff Woistman (banjo) In addition to playing the tenor banjo he is a classical guitarist. He is at home with both the chordal style playing in ensemble work, and especially as part of the Trio performances, the single-string style of the ragtime era. Jeff works as a food services manager near where he lives in Kirkland, Washington.
Pete Devine (percussionist) (not in photo) is well known in the field of ragtime and jazz. He is one-third of the Bo Grumpus Trio, which has played every major jazz and ragtime festival for years. A full-time musician from San Francisco, Pete works in the Bay area and is often a studio player in New York City. He is a serious ragtime record collector.
