The St. Louis Ragtimers were formed in September 1961 to play on the riverboats in St. Louis and have performed continuously since then at jazz and ragtime concerts and festivals. Home base for the St. Louis Ragtimers in the early days was the historic Goldenrod Showboat, where the group hosted an annual Traditional Jazz and Ragtime Festival each summer in the late 1960s to 1980s. The St. Louis Ragtimers play a dynamic style of ragtime and dixieland jazz. Featured were Phil Mason on coronet, Al Striker on banjo, Don Franz on tuba and Trebor Tichenor on the piano. They have recorded more than a half dozen LPs and CDs and several years ago the St. Louis Ragtimers were featured on the NBC Today Show.
Trebor Tichenor, in addition to leading the St. Louis Ragtimers, is a
ragtime pianist and composer of international reputation.
Trebor has lived most of his life in St. Louis where he has been a
"point man" for ragtimers visiting and/or playing in St. Louis.
For nearly four decades Trebor has been featured at Ragtime and Jazz
Festivals. Trebor's weekly radio show "Ragophile" (St. Louis,
1973-1987) provided an opportunity for many to learn about traditional
jazz and ragtime. Washington University continues to offer an
interesting course in Ragtime taught by Trebor Tichenor. Trebor
has produced three piano solo albums and acted as a consultant on
numerous other recordings. He coauthored "Rags and Ragtime"
with David Jasen which is one of the best reference book on ragtime
ever published. In 1997 he received the Gentleman of Jazz
award from the San Diego Dixieland Festival.
